Esta investigación tuvo por objetivo analizar el uso e influencia de la tradición clásica en las principales Historias Naturales de los jesuitas chilenos de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Esta se enmarca dentro de los estudios de la tradición clásica. No obstante, también resultan muy importantes las investigaciones realizadas sobre las historias naturales, convirtiéndose así, tradición clásica e historias naturales, en los dos pilares fundamentales de este proyecto.

Existen importantes estudios sobre los naturalistas jesuitas chilenos, así como también de la historia de las ciencias naturales y de la tradición clásica, sin embargo, escasamente estas cosas se cruzan. Por tanto, la contribución de esta investigación fue indagar la importancia y relevar la existencia de la tradición clásica en los naturalistas jesuitas chilenos y desde allí proyectar nuevas líneas de contribución a la historia de las ciencias naturales en Chile.

De esta manera, la investigación trabajó con dos hipótesis:

H1- Que existe en los naturalistas jesuitas chilenos presencia de la tradición clásica hasta ahora escasamente investigada.

H2- Que si esto es así, existiría un nuevo foco para aportar a la historia de las ciencias naturales en Chile.

La revisión que realizamos de los principales avances en estos campos nos permitió evidenciar que el tema planteado en esta investigación Tradición clásica en los naturalistas jesuitas chilenos. Una contribución desde la antigüedad clásica a la historia de las ciencias naturales en Chile (siglos XVII-XVIII), resultó innovador y aportó decididamente a la historia de las ciencias naturales en nuestro país.

This research aims to analyze the use and influence of the classical tradition in major natural histories of the Chilean Jesuits of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is part of the studies of the classical tradition. However, very important results on the research on natural histories, becoming classical tradition and natural histories, the two pillars of this project.

There are important studies on Chilean Jesuit naturalists, as well as the history of the natural sciences and classical tradition, however, these things rarely intersect. Therefore, the contribution of this research is to investigate the importance and assess the existence of the classical tradition in Chilean Jesuit naturalists and from there to project new contribution lines to the history of the natural sciences in Chile.

Thus, the research works with two hypothesis:

H1- That exists in the Chilean Jesuit naturalists, the presence of the classical tradition has hitherto scarcely been investigated.

H2- If this is so, there would be a new focus to support the history of the natural sciences in Chile.

The revision will then major advances in these fields and will allow us to demonstrate that the issue raised in this research it is innovative and contributes decisively to the history of the natural sciences in our country.
